A learning journal is often used as part of a student’s self-directed learning activity where they record the hours spent on self-directed learning activities; the questions, areas or concepts they are unclear about or are finding difficult to understand; notes and reflections from their learning and assigned activities; the research work they undertook for their learning along with the sources they looked up; how they believe they are progressing in the unit; and what additional support or assistance they will require prior to assessment.

In accordance with the requirements of the Standards for RTOs 2015, RTOs are to provide their students with the opportunity to apply to have their prior learning and experience recognised towards a nationally recognised qualification or units of competence for which they are enrolled in.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is an assessment-only process that assesses a student’s workplace experience and/or formal and informal training to determine their competency against the relevant accredited unit.
